Yasmin is an orally administered drug which is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 28 film coated tablets. The patient feels less pain and more regular bleeding during treatment by this drug. Yasmin is safe and effective medication to avoid pregnancy. This drug is sometimes prescribed for women who have problems with particularly heavy, painful or irregular periods.


How does Yasmin work?

Yasmin is a combination of two active ingredients, Ethinylestradiol, and Drospirenone. These are synthetic molecules of a natural substance known as estrogen and progesterone which is a female sex hormone. This drug works by preventing ovulation means inhibits release of an egg from an ovary and also changes cervical and uterine lining to makes it harder for sperm to reach and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.


What are the contraindications of taking Yasmin?

  • You should not use this drug if you are allergic to any ingredient in Yasmin
  • If you have a history of blood clotting problems then you should not use this drug
  • This medication is not advised for a heart patient
  • If you have kidney disease, adrenal disease, liver disease or liver tumors then you should not use this drug

What other drugs that should not be used along with of Yasmin?  

While using this medication, avoid using following drugs if you are already using theses drug consult doctor before taking Yasmin.

Eplerenone, Enalapril, Losartan, Naproxen, Ketoconazole, Phenobarbital, Bosentan, Carbamazepine, Felbamate, Griseofulvin, Hydantoins Phenytoin, Modafinil, Nevirapine, Penicillins Ampicillin, Phenylbutazone, Rifampin, Tetracyclines, Doxycycline, Propranolol, Prednisolone, Cyclosporine, Theophylline, Tizanidine, and Troleandomycin.


How to store Yasmin?

Store Yasmin at room temperature 25 to 30oC; keep this drug out of reach from children and pets.


How to use Yasmin?

Take Yasmin with a full glass of water. You may take Yasmin with or without food. Yasmin contains 28 tablets. 21 are hormonal pills and 7 are non-hormonal pills. First open, a pack of 21 tablets and take it for 21 days regularly and then take 7 remaining pills. After completing start fresh pack. Take Yasmin same time each day at same time.


Missed dose of Yasmin:

Take as soon as possible in case of missed dose, skip if the time for next dose.


Overdose of Yasmin:

Do not take double dose as it can cause an overdose. If you feel overdose then consult a doctor as soon as possible for medical help.


Possible side effects of Yasmin:

Some side effects may appear while administering this drug: Breast tenderness; bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods; nausea; stomach cramps or bloating; vomiting; weight gain, rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; and tightness in the chest.


You should follow some safety precaution while administering Yasmin?

  • This drug should not be administered within 4 to 6 weeks after giving birth
  • Do not use Yasmin if you are pregnant as it can harm the fetus
  • In the case of lactation this drug is also avoided as it can harm the baby
