Norethindrone does not contain any estrogen. This medication is more effective than other birth control medicine. Women who cannot take estrogen take this medication.


How do Norethindrone works?

Norethindrone helps to prevent sperm from reaching a fertilized egg and changing the uterus lining by making the vaginal fluid thicker. It also stops the ovulation in about half of the women's menstrual cycles.


Contraindications of Norethindrone

 Norethindrone is contraindicated when used under certain medical conditions: 

  • Avoid Norethindrone if you are hypersensitive towards its active ingredients.
  • If you consume Norethindrone while smoking it may increase the risk of serious side effects.
  • Check with your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while using this medication.
  • Norethindrone should never used to test pregnancy.
  • Don't take this medication if you have recently had a miscarriage or abortion.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are suffering with the medical conditions like history of stroke or blood clot, liver disease, abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • This medication may cause some birth defects so do not use this medication if you are pregnant.

Drug interactions of Norethindrone

Norethindrone shows drug interaction when used along with the combination of the following drugs:

Rifampin, St. John's Wort, Griseofulvin, Ketoconazole, barbiturate, phenobarbital, HIV medicines, Herbal products, anticonvulsants.


Dose for abnormal uterine bleeding

You should consume 2.5mg to 10mg by mouth with a glassful of water. This medicine should be strictly continued up to 5to10 days at the time of second half of the menstrual cycle.

Dose for endometriosis

The preliminary suggested dose of Norethindrone is 5mg. Norethindrone tablet should be administered by the mouth with a full glass of water. It should be taken only one time in a day for first two weeks. Norethindrone therapy should be strictly continued up to 6to9 months.

Missed dose of Norethindrone

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. But if it is almost near to the time for the next dose, skip and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up the missed one.


Over dose of Norethindrone

If you suspect an overdose of Norethindrone then immediately seeks medical attention.


Storage instructions of Norethindrone

Norethindrone is to be Stored at controlled room temperature 15 - 25°C. Protect it from heat light and moisture. Keep away from the reach of children.


Side effects of Norethindrone

Individual may face certain common side effects after Intake of Norethindrone such as upset stomach, enlarged or tender breasts, changes in menstrual flow, slow or difficult speech, irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting, migraine headache, pain, warmth, or heaviness in the back of the lower leg, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, acne, growth of hair on face, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, dizziness or faintness, swelling of the arms, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, Depression, brown patches on the face.

There are some safety measures to be adopted while using this medication.

  • If you use this medication for the first time use this along with back-up birth control, such as condoms or a spermicides.
  • Norethindrone is not meant to provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases--including HIV and AIDS.
  • Take doctor permission prior to consume this medicine if you are having a dental surgery.
