Celexa is an antidepressant drug containing Citalopram as an active ingredient. Citalopram is used to treat depression associated with mood disorders. Celexa has also gained its remarkable application in the management of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric syndrome, anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder

Mechanism of action of Celexa 10mg:

Citalopram shows antidepressant, anti-obsessive-compulsive, and antibulimic actions, which is associated with inhibition of CNS neuronal uptake of serotonin. Citalopram blocks the reuptake of serotonin and enhances the more serotonin in the brain to stimulate nerve cells. Thus, maintain the balance of Serotonin in the brain and reduces depressive state of mind.

Dosage regimen of Celexa 10mg:

The recommended dose of Celexa is 20mg once daily either in the morning or in evening. It can be taken with or without food. The maximum dose of Celexa is 40mg per day at an interval of not less than one week. Dosage should not be above the recommended dose due to the risk of QT prolongation. A dose of 20 of Celexa per day is the maximum recommended dose for patients who are greater than 60 years of age.

Contraindications of Celexa 10mg:

  • Concomitant use of Celexa in patients taking Pimozide is contraindicated.
  • Celexa should not be used in patients with a hypersensitivity to Citalopram or any of the inactive ingredients in Celexa.
  • Citalopram should not be used in patients who are taking other drugs that prolong the QTc interval.
  • Patients with bradycardia, hypokalemia, acute myocardial infarction or uncompensated heart failure should not use this medication.


  • Use of Celexa should not be stopped within 14 days of treatment because it can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
  • If you have recently taken a MAO, then wait for 14 days prior to the use of Celexa.
  • Do not recommend Celexa to a patient under 18 years of age without consulting a doctor.

Side effects of Celexa 10mg:

Common side effects of Celexa include nausea, weight gain, insomnia, and an increase in appetite, frequent urination, dry mouth, sweating, diarrhea, excessive yawning, fatigue and vivid dreaming.

Overdose of Celexa 10mg:

An overdose of Celexa may result in vomiting, dizziness, sedation, disturbances in heart rhythm, tremor, sweating, coma or convulsions.
