Crestor is a prescribed drug for adults and children older than 10 year to treat heart disease, strokes and heart attacks. Crestor is available as a generic form called rosuvastatin. Rosuvastatin works by controlling or show down the production of cholesterol by the body that can build up in the arteries and obstruct the flow of blood to the brain, heart and other parts of the body.

Crestor comes under the class of cholesterol lowering drug called statins. Crestor is conjugation with a diet low in fats and exercise (about 30 minutes every day).

Mechanism of action Crestor 5mg:

Crestor is a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, a rate limiting enzyme which converts 3-hydroxy-3methylglutaryl co-enzyme A to mevalonate, which is a precursor of cholesterol. It is an early and rate limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis.

Resuvastation helps to reduce cholesterol by increasing the number of low density lipoproteins receptors on the surface of the cell to increase uptake and catabolism of low density lipoprotein. It also inhibits hepatic synthesis of hepatic very low density lipoproteins, which finally result in the reduce of the total number of very low density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein particles. The treatment reduces triglycerides and produces increase in high density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Dosage of Crestor 10mg:

Crestor is available in 5mg and 10mg dosage.

Initial recommended of Crestor is 5 or 10mg and it can be can be taken with or without food at any time of the day. The tablet of Crestor is swallowed whole with full glass of water. Do not take two tablets within 24 hours. Confirm with your physician in case of increase or decreased in the Crestor dose.

Contraindication Rosuvastatin 5mg, 10mg:

Do not take Crestor in some cases such as,

Have allergic reaction to Crestor or any of its ingredients.
Pregnant and breast feeding women should avoid this medication.
If you have liver disease, kidney problem, muscle aches or pain.
Do not take this medication if your thyroid gland is not working properly.
If you are taking other medications called fibrates to lower your cholesterol.


Using certain other drugs together with Crestor can increase the risk of serious muscle problem. It is important to tell you doctor if you are using other medication such as colchicine, cyclosporine, other statin medication, antifungal, antiviral, blood thinner medication, other cholesterol medications and medication that contain niacin or nicotinic acid.

Side-effects of Crestor tablets:

Crestor can cause some of the side effects such as hives, swelling of face, difficult breathing, liver problem, nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, dark urine, jaundice, headache, muscle aches and loss of appetite.

Precautions Crestor 5mg, 10mg:

Crestor is not given to patients below 18 years age.
Do not take this medication if you have severe respiratory failure.
Avoid drinking alcohol as it can raise triglyceride levels and increase the risk of liver damage. Avoid eating foods that are highly fatty. Crestor will not be as effective in lowering cholesterol if you are not following cholesterol lowering diet plan.


Store crestor tablets in their original blister package below 30°C. Keep at room temperature in order to protect from moisture and heat.
